Internal Family Systems Therapy For Anxiety

Updated: Nov 15

You might feel stuck in patterns that don’t serve you. Maybe past trauma or self-sabotage keeps pulling you back. I want to share a gentle, effective way to understand and heal those inner struggles. It’s called Internal Family Systems (IFS). This Internal Family Systems guide will walk you through what IFS is, how it works, and why it might be the key to unlocking your emotional freedom.

What Is Internal Family Systems Therapy for Anxiety?

An IFS Family Guide

Internal Family Systems therapy looks at the mind as a system made up of different inner parts or aspects - and not as a “mono-mind”. Think of it like a family inside you. Each part has its own feelings, thoughts, experiences, and roles. Some parts protect you, some hold pain, and others might cause conflict. When these parts don’t work well together, you feel stuck or overwhelmed.

IFS therapy helps you meet these parts with curiosity and kindness. Instead of pushing feelings down or fighting them, you learn to listen and understand. This approach helps you heal from the inside out. It’s especially helpful if you’ve experienced trauma or find yourself self-sabotaging or repeating toxic patterns in life.

Imagine your mind as a team. When the team members argue or don’t cooperate, the whole team struggles. IFS helps you become the coach who guides the team to work together. You learn to calm the parts that are scared or angry and support the parts that want to heal.

How Does Internal Family Systems Therapy Work?

  • Identify your parts: Notice the different voices or feelings inside you.

  • Build trust with your Self: Your Self Core Essence of you. It is the calm, compassionate leader inside you.

  • Understand each part’s role: Every part tries to help, even if it causes problems.

  • Heal wounded parts: Gently “listen to understand” with parts that carry pain or trauma.

  • Create harmony: Help your parts cooperate and support your well-being.

This process takes time and patience. But with practice, you can transform your inner world and your outer life.

How Internal Family Systems Helps You Heal

IFS therapy is powerful because it respects your inner complexity. You are not just one thing. You are many parts, each with its own story, experience, and approach. When you learn to listen to these parts, you gain insight and control.

For example, you might have a part that criticizes you harshly. Another part might feel scared to try new things. IFS helps you understand why these parts act this way. Maybe the critic wants to protect you from failure. The scared part might be holding old trauma.

By connecting with these parts, you can soothe their fears and reduce their control over your life. You learn to trust your Self-energy (Core Essence) to lead with calmness, clarity, and confidence. This shift can reduce anxiety, depression, and self-sabotage.

Practical Steps to Start Using IFS

  1. Pause and notice: When you feel upset, stop and ask, “What part of me is speaking?”

  2. Name the part: Give it a simple name like “The Worrier” or “The Protector.”

  3. Ask questions: What does this part want me to know? What is it afraid will happen if it doesn’t protect me?

  4. Offer kindness: Thank the part for trying to help, even if it’s causing trouble.

  5. Invite your Self to lead: Imagine your calm, wise Self stepping forward to guide the part.

You don’t have to do this alone. A trained IFS Practitioner who is experienced and can create a safe space for you by staying in their own Self-energy (Core Essence) can support you in this process. But even small steps on your own can bring relief.

What Is the IFS Therapy Controversy?

While many find IFS therapy helpful, it’s not without debate. Some critics question whether the idea of “parts” is too abstract or unscientific. They worry it might oversimplify complex mental health issues. However, it is an evidence-based peer-reviewed method that is widely acknowledged and accepted in scientific medical journals, and is even acknowledged in the widely-known trauma book "The Body Keeps The Score" by Dr. Bessel van der Kolk.

Others argue that IFS requires skilled guidance. Without proper support, people might get overwhelmed by their inner parts. It’s important to approach IFS with care and professional help when needed.

Many practitioners , therapists, and clients report deep healing through IFS. It offers a hopeful, compassionate way to work with trauma and self-sabotage. Like any emotional healing method, it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution. But it’s worth exploring if you want to understand yourself and your inner system (subconscious) better.

How to Find the Right Support for Your Emotional Healing Journey

If you feel drawn to IFS, finding the right practitioner is key. Look for someone trained in IFS by the IFS Institute or IFSCA Stepping Stones training who has used IFS for their own emotional healing work and who understands trauma and self-sabotage. A good practitioner will:

  • Create a safe, non-judgmental space

  • Guide you gently through your inner parts

  • Not have their own agenda

  • Guide rather than force or push you

  • Help you build trust in your Self

  • Support your healing at your own pace
